Restricted in Love

Untitled

A photo of a boy, eating oatmeal and drinking hot chocolate, and sitting on his toes as only little boys can do.

Very often we feel restricted in our situations, our families, or our surroundings. But maybe the real problem lies elsewhere: in our hearts. There we are restricted, and that is the root of our lack of freedom. If we loved more, love would give our lives infinite dimensions, and we would no longer feel hemmed in.

All the Merry Making

UntitledMyles: "Feliz Navidad is the best Christmas song ever." Christmas cookies and cousin bonding today. Not sure we are ready for this level of madness!UntitledUntitledShe's making me a secret popcorn recipe. It might be my new love language.

This Christmas season has been one where many normal things, those that I would have considered traditional, haven't happened. Though today was quite chaotic, it was important to me that we squeeze in one cousin day before Christmas on Thursday. There was mass cookie baking and decorating, some playing in our cul-de-sac in between the rain showers, and catching up over a cup of coffee (say what?) with my 17-year old niece.

The introvert in me is ready to curl up in a hole and hibernate for about 72 hours, but overall, the chaos of today was well worth it.

Happy Bloggy Birthday to my friend Carrie at Reading to Know!

As part of her birthday celebration, she is holding a little contest for an Amazon gift card - the requirement is to post a photo of yourself with your favorite book. She and I share a deep love for L.M. Mongomery's writings and so it was easy to pick my favorite from the series - Anne of Windy Poplars. (This is my original, well-loved book from the box set I was given in junior high). Windy Poplars has always been my favorite of the series - partly because Anne is off on her adventures as a teacher, living with the precious Aunts Kate and Chatty and one-of-a-kind Rebecca Dew, and also because a majority of the book is written from the standpoint of letters from her to Gilbert. As someone who truly misses the art of corresponding by mail, I loved reading the (highly wordy) letters that she sent to Gilbert and I'm a sucker for pretty much any book written in this fashion.

All book-loving talk aside, Carrie is a wonderful friend and one that I am so thankful to have gotten to know through blogging. There are lots of times I contemplate throwing in the towel on this little online space (time being precious and hard to come by lately), but I am so thankful for some of the relationships that I have made through writing in this spot and commenting on other blogs. My book-loving friends Carrie and Amy fall into this category. They are an encouragement to me as a wife and a parent and I am so glad the internet has enlarged my world to include them.

40 Days

Pretty symbolic of our weather. #pictapgo_app

I need Lent this year.

There has been a lot of complaining. (You probably have not heard it but it's there).

There has been stewing over situations and letting frustrations fester.

There has been the trying-to-do-all-the-stuff to the point that none of the stuff gets done.

40 days. I need this season. A season that isn't talked about much in the circles that I generally run in, but one that I want to learn more about and benefit from. I do not, under any circumstances, profess to be an expert on Lent. But a season of reflection in the 40 days until Easter, to think about the sacrifice that Jesus faced on the cross for me and the victory that He won. And to think about why he made that sacrifice.

Me. My sin. My shame.

Time to reflect on what he has done for me when I was so underserving.

Resources / books that I'm gathering:
Lent Journal from Naptime Diaries
Journey to the Cross Devotional from The Gospel Coalition
Keep a Quiet Heart by Elisabeth Elliott

Morning Prayer

Untitled

Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought me in safety to this new day: Preserve me with your mighty power, that I may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all I do direct me to the fulfilling of your purpose; through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen

Hello November

Hello November.

Hello November.

Leaves everywhere make me happy.

Hello to leaves everywhere.

Happy fall.

Hello to boys (and girls) enjoying those last few moments of daylight on cool afternoons before the sun sets so early.

Listening to Handel's Messiah (the Hallelujah chorus to be precise) and teaching girls how to follow the sheet music.

Hello to cozy evenings inside, listening to music and learning together. (He’s walking her through the sheet music to the Hallelujah Chorus as they listen).

Crockpot Tuesday (on a Wednesday) : harvest stew. Recipe from @kris_wuhsmom with a few modifications.

Hello to cozy suppers. (And cozy lunch leftovers).

I may have found what is my next inspiration for running - I have discovered @thepioneerwoman on amazon prime video. I'm inspired to run farther so I can make and eat what I'm watching!

Hello to plans and thoughts on paper.

The end of a long day. Attended the funeral of a friend's father this morning who had lived a simple godly life with a rich heritage and legacy of family left behind while at the same time getting updates about a friend's daughter who is at the bedside of

Hello to evenings under the blankets with a good book (or several).

Hello to thankfulness and family and remembering … all things that come to mind as part of November.

Looking for Light

7'28'2013iPa

I’ve recently become acquainted (and enamored) with a new-to-me blog called Pink Ronnie. I discovered her through Project Life earlier this year and have enjoyed a peek into her scrapbooking process and style.

One of the things that I have admired about her photos is her constant search for light and shadow in her home. It’s inspired me to look around my room for some fresh perspective on our home.

7'28'2013iPi

We have lived here now for a little over two years and while I still am so thankful and grateful for this beautiful home we have, some of the newness is wearing off and I’m forgetting to be as thankful as I once was. There are dings in door facings and scuffs on baseboards. The school room is the hottest room in the house during the summer which is somewhat frustrating as it’s where we spend most of our time.

7'28'2013iPj

However, in the grand scheme of these, the inconveniences are SO MINOR. We have plenty of room, clean water, a roof over our head that doesn’t leak and the blessings could go on.

7'28'2013iPk

Sometimes a little refocusing is in order. I’m thankful for this lesson that is working on my heart.

In no particular order...

#ABeautifulMess

Counting gifts today, just because. I, along with a few other friends, are going through Ann Voskamp's One Thousand Gifts study (with DVD) and I'm so enjoying the time to just meditate and sit on these chapters slowly as opposed to the can't-put-it-down approach that I read the book with the first time. This week we talked about chapter 4-5 and while there was much to think about, I have been chewing over the words on slowing down and being present and thankful with my days. I'm so guilty of judging my days by my list and what is and isn't checked off (and I'm not saying that a list isn't a good thing!) ... but there's more to life than a to-do list.

That said, so gifts that I'm noting today: (oh, the irony that this is a list after that first paragraph!) : )

  • being thankful that I got a little extra sleep yesterday instead of fussing that I overslept
  • having the time to get out and run yesterday morning
  • and having the kids with me (riding bikes and roller blades) instead of fussing that I didn't get to run as long as normal because I had to stop and deal with skinned knees or push a stroller.
  • the blessing of a 15 year old girl in our Classical Conversations group that came over for a few hours yesterday
  • and the several hours that I got out of the house
  • lunch with T
  • finding a new Bible, on clearance! and fitting all of my picky criteria that I had set up for what I was looking for! (Large print so I could read it easily, big margins, single column - all the little things I hadn't been able to previously find all in one Bible!)
  • finding a new bathing suit for me that didn't break the budget! (and was a smaller size). : )
  • finding the little girls several pairs of shorts at Goodwill that were longer (more modest) lengths!
  • having my friend Candy bring over dinner last night for our small group - she had a recipe she wanted to make and I was happy to let her! (And it was delicious!)
  • our summer mama's study that we have had the last two Fridays and the women that have come
  • taking the kids to swim this afternoon for a while
  • playing "monkey in the middle" with a tennis ball in the water
  • N1 finding a lost car that the boy had left at the pool the last time - he was so excited
  • family pizza and movie night - we have been off schedule of having these regularly because of spring softball and I was in my pjs by 5pm and ready to relax for the night!
  • a boy that went to bed and was out like a light after a morning with friends and an afternoon in the pool
All such little things, but making an effort to be present in them has been good for my heart.

Around Here

Untitled Untitled Untitled

Photos from our Classical Conversations end of the year night. Top picture is N2’s class (she is on the far left); middle is N1 (she is in orange, 2nd student from the right); and the bottom is B and me (she is standing next to me).

Last day of CBS until fall. E’s teacher is a gem. We are really going to miss her next year when he moves up into a “big boy” class.

Untitled

A big adventure coming up for one of the girls this summer.

Untitled

This boy + this dog. The girls were the one that wanted the dog, but the boy is the one that loves him the most I think.

Untitled

Roses that have started blooming this week.

Untitled

A few moments sitting on the back patio on a Friday afternoon. Dad and girl playing catch (not seem are a boy and dog rolling around on the ground in between them). Fresh coffee. Notebooks of ideas. Herbs from a wonderful family gifted to us.

A blessed and very full week.

30 Days of Thanks ::: Day 5

#Thankful to have found my charm bracelet which had been lost for almost two years!

Finding a special bracelet this weekend that I thought was long gone (…like missing for almost two years).

Finding a new tactic for working with my kindergartener. I don’t know how long we will stick with it, but today was a good day.

A new plan of attack with B.

For my B, with her twinkly deep chocolate-y eyes.

Boys in boxes.

Boy in a box.

Warm spaghetti for dinner (from yummy sauce in my freezer) after a day where I was chilled all day.

Counting my gifts this November.

One of my goals this year has been to diversify my reading. As I've spent the last 17 years homeschooling anywhere from 1-4 kids, I woul...
