Download N Go has a lapbook / unit study for all four seasons and these are some of my favorite to do with my new 1st grader. We have spent time this week talking about the seasons in general and why and how they change, and some of the fun things that only come around once a year when it is summertime ... like special cold treats and certain activities!
Interspersed throughout the unit study, are short videos that can be viewed. These make for a great little visual break for both mom and student. While I wouldn't want to do a whole curriculum based around a video, a three minute animated video on the earth's rotation has given both me and Noelle some visual examples as we learn about the changing seasons and why it is so HOT here right now! : ) There are also lapbook elements that you can add as you want to enhance your study. Because Download N Go has an age range of K - 4th grade, some of these are more appropriate for older students than younger and vice verse, but I like the flexibility of having them there if I want to do them.
Below is the information from Download N Go that will give a little more of an overview of the study and at the end of this post, you can find out how you can win a copy of this unit study for your own family.

I was provided a copy of this unit study in exchange for an honest review of our experience with it.
So, I keep going back and looking at lapbooks. They seem like a lot of fun but then I become concerned that perhaps lapbooks in general are beyond my 4 and 5 yr old. I should mention that my 5 yr old is a boy so his learning interest/style is definitely not like his sisters. Do you think that these lapbooks are easy enough to simplify for the little ones. I was looking at some of the examples and unsure. They definitely had some fun ones though. Pizza might just hold J's attention. :-)
ReplyDeleteI think it just depends on the child and the thing I like about them is that I can taylor to the child. When we did our first few ones, Noelle mostly just colored different things or glued where I said to. Nothing much more complicated than that. Now, since she’s writing more, we do more of the “worksheet” type activity, but depending on how complicated it is I either let her answer it or I turn it into a fill-in-the-blank or multiple choice for her.
ReplyDeleteAnd some of the Download N Go ones are definitely easier than others. The seasonal ones – like this summer one – I think are much “lighter” for lack of a better word than some of the others like Ben Franklin or China, etc. Those are more fact heavy while the seasonal ones have lots of observational type activites. What is like outside, what do you see the trees doing, etc.
Hope that helps!
I am a big fan of Download N Go. We started Pizza Party today. It's our 4th one. I've reviewed the others on my blog and I am giving away Roller Coasters on my blog. http://fruitofhands.blogspot.com/2010/08/download-n-go-roller-coasters.html
